A tsunami warning has been issued in Indonesia, after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast in Sumatra on Wednesday, 2 March.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, and had a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicenter of the quake is located at 808 kilometres from the city of Padang.

Indonesian authorities issued the warning almost immediately after the tremors, and are on high alert mode at the moment.

Indonesia lies in the seismically active 'Pacific Ring of Fire zone', which witnesses frequent earthquakes and volcanoes.

No casualties have been reported following the earthquake, so far.
