United States President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) offered his condolences to the family of a US soldier killed in Somalia.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of our serviceman who was killed and his fellow servicemen who were wounded in Somalia [sic]. They are truly all HEROES," Trump tweeted.

Trump's tweet came few hours after the military officially reported the Special Operations agent's death.

"During an operation June 8, 2018, in Jubaland, Somalia, one U.S. Special Operations member was killed and four U.S. service members and one partner force was wounded as the result of an enemy attack," the Hill reported, citing a statement issued by the U.S. Africa Command (Africom).

According to the report, the death is the first such incident of its kind in Africa, since an ambush by Islamic State-aligned fighters in Niger claimed the lives of four US soldiers last year.

Meanwhile, Trump is in Canada for the two-day 44th Group of Seven summit to be held in La Malbaie.

Thereafter, the US President will head to Singapore for his much-awaited meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, scheduled to take place on June 12.
