Three of five men who assaulted a young woman in Pune on 1 May for wearing a short dress have been arrested. The police are seeking the two other men.

On 1 May, while returning home accompanied by two male friends, the 22-year-old advertising executive was harassed at a traffic light by five men in the car next to hers. The men shouted abuses at her, surrounded the car, dragged her out by her hair and beat her up.

According to the woman, they said: "No girl from our family would wear short clothes and accompany men at 5 in the morning."

She alleged that the police refused to file an FIR or accept a formal complaint for a week. Action was taken only after she approached a senior police officer. Pune's police commissioner Rashmi Shukla said that action will be taken against the policemen who did not register the case, according to NDTV.

The woman said: "I was with my friends and they started teasing us and when my friends asked them to stop, they followed us to my home and then abused and beat us up before leaving the spot." They beat her friends too.

Five minutes later, the men returned and threatened the woman against calling for help.

"They told me that they know my home and could find me later. They said we could complain to whoever we want to, but they are well-connected and nothing would happen to them," she said.
