Apart from 'odd/even' number solution for vehicles, here's what AAP govt has proposed to clean up Delhi

Taking a major step to combat the deadly pollution levels in the national capital, the Delhi government has decided to allow odd and even number vehicles to be on the roads on alternate days, starting from January 2015.

The announcement was made by Delhi government Chief Secretary K K Sharma during a press conference today.

The restriction, however, won't apply to public vehicles as per the government.

Here are the other measures announced by Sharma at the meeting:

1) The government will shut down the Badarpur Thermal Power plant which is adding to the city's pollution.

BUT... won't it effect the power supply?

To this Sharma replied that the government is prepared to buy power from other states in case such a situation arises. He added that it is a trade off as the benefits of shutting the plant are more important for citizens' health in the national capital.

2) The movement of trucks in Delhi will be allowed from 10.30 am - 11 pm instead of 9 pm. According to Sharma, the 9 pm entry of trucks in the national capital slows down the traffic, resulting in the extension of time vehicles stay on road. This in turn escalates pollution.

3) There will be strict monitoring of the carrier vehicle entering Delhi. Those without proper Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates will be fined accordingly.

4) Extra buses and metro trains will be added in the commutation network.

5)The government is planning to implement the EURO 6 standards for vehicles in the city by the year 2017.

6)The Delhi government's anti-corruption app will be modified where in citizens will be able to click pictures of pollution norms being flouted. The photos then will be sent to the government authorities for further proceedings.

7) Some of the roads of the Public Welfare Department which have been taken by the Municipal Corporations of Delhi for parking purposes will be reused for commuting as parking spaces create congestion.

8) The government also plans to launch awareness campaigns and drives in the near future.
