Last Wednesday saw the release of Bollywood film Sultan starring Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma. The movie released on Eid (6 July), and had the benefit of the five-day weekend and major contributions came in on the weekend itself. The movie opened to houseful shows in almost all the cinemas in Chennai despite clashing with two Tamil films, Santhanam starrer Dhilluku Dhuttu and Shiva Arun Balaji's Adra Machan Visilu.

The superstar film released in 12 cinemas in Chennai and registered 80% collections throughout the opening weekend. Sultan has collected a record-breaking Rs 1.22 crore to become the highest Bollywood grosser of the year at Chennai Box Office. The Ali Abbas Zafar directorial has overpowered the Chennai lifetime collections of many Bollywood films including Akshay Kumar starrers Airlift, Housefull 3, Shah Rukh Khan's Fan and Sonam Kapoor's Neerjawithin five days of its release.

Meanwhile, Sultan has made history by collecting Rs 182 crore in just five days of its theatrical release. The film is all set to become the fastest Bollywood film to cross the coveted Rs 200 crore mark in India today (6 days), a record which was previously shared by Aamir Khan starrers Dhoom 3, PK, and Salman Khan's 2015 Eid release, Bajrangi Bhaijaan. All three films hit the double century mark in nine days.
