On 25 May, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was taken under preventive detention by the J&K police, from his office in Srinagar. This comes right ahead of the planned joint shutdown in the valley, called by the pro-freedom leaders, scheduled for 26 May.
According to a report in the Greater Kashmir, a JKLF spokesperson revealed that Malik was arrested from his office in the Abi Guzar locality of Srinagar.
"A large posse of policemen arrived at the JKLF office situated at Abi Guzar and detained Malik. He was lodged at Kothi Bagh police station," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was also placed under house arrest earlier today.
The shutdown scheduled for 26 May was planned by Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani, Malik and Mirwaiz.
