After 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon was hanged on 30 July in Nagpur central jail, many political leaders took to Twitter to express their views on the much debated execution.
Most praised the judiciary for making sure that Yakub was given a fair hearing even hours before his hanging was due. However, some also called for a relook at capital punishment.
Yakub Memon hanged. Exemplary urgency and commitment has been shown by Govt and Judiciary in punishing an accused of Terror .— digvijaya singh (@digvijaya_28) July 30, 2015
I hope similar commitment of Govt and Judiciary would be shown in all cases of Terror irrespective of their Caste Creed and Religion.— digvijaya singh (@digvijaya_28) July 30, 2015
There is no evidence that death penalty serves as a deterrent: to the contrary in fact. All it does is exact retribution: unworthy of a Govt— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) July 30, 2015
We must fight against terrorism w/all the means at our command. But cold-blooded execution has never prevented a terror attack anywhere.— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) July 30, 2015
I'm not commenting on the merits of a specific case: that's for the Supreme Court to decide. Problem is death penalty in principle&practice— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) July 30, 2015
