Veteran Kerala politician KM Mani passes away at 86, after prolonged illness

Veteran Kerala politician KM Mani, who was suffering from a prolonged illness and was undergoing a treatment for chest infection, has passed away in Kochi.

A private hospital had said today that Mani was under close medical supervision and a bulletin of his health was released on Monday.


In a press release, the hospital said, “Hon. KM Mani is under treatment in our hospital under Dr Hari Lakshmanan, chief pulmonologist, Dept of Pulmonology for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) with chest infection. He is being treated as per the existing standards of care.”

Mani had been suffering from COPD from a long period of time and he was hospitalized several times due to chest infection. Earlier, on April 4, Mani was admitted after he complained about chest infection.

The veteran politician of Kerala has consecutively won for 50 years as an MLA of Pala assembly constituency. He was a member of the Kerala Congress (M), which makes up a key ally of the Congress-led United Democratic Front.

Mani was also declared as a party candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Kerala, scheduled to happen on April 23. Mani was selected for Kottayam constituency but was not seen campaigning as he was frequently hospitalized due to his chest pain.
