UP: Horrifying! Woman sold for Rs 10,000 by father, gangraped in Meerut; set herself on fire

In a shameful incident, a young woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur was allegedly sold by her father for Rs 10,000. The woman, a widow, was later gang-raped by her alleged buyers for whom she was forced to work as domestic help in Meerut.

The victim in her late 20s went to the police station to file a complaint where the police officials allegedly refused to register her complaint.

According to the Delhi Commission for Women, after the victim was turned away by the police, she set herself on fire on April 28. The woman is now admitted to a Ghaziabad hospital with 80 per cent burn injuries.

The Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal has written a letter to UP CM Yogi Adityanath alleges that police officers, including the Hapur SP, refused to file an FIR in the case.

"This insensitivity and shameful conduct of the UP police compelled the survivor to immolate herself," the letter further claims.

However, the UP police refuted the allegation that senior officials turned her away and said the matter is under investigation.

The DCW has also demanded compensation for the victim as well as an inquiry into inaction by Hapur police.

"We have received a complaint against at least 14 persons and a probe has been set up," SHO Baburgarh told TOI.
