Uber rape convict sentenced to life imprisonment

Uber rape case convict Shiv Kumar Yadav was sentenced to life imprisonment till death by a Delhi Court on Tuesday.

Taking to reporters, Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastav told reporters outside the Tis Hazari Court: "We requested the Court to give him maximum punishment to send a strong message to the society."

According to media reports, the court has also directed the Delhi Legal Services Authority to give compensation to the victim and to take care of the family of the convict.

"The convict was awarded life imprisonment till his natural life under section 376 (2A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC); one year of imprisonment and Rs 1,000 fine under section 323 of the IPC; 10 years of jail and Rs 5,000 fine under section 366 of the IPC; and seven years of imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine under section 506 of the IPC," said Srivastav, while elaborating upon the quantum of punishment awarded to Yadav.
