Actor Rishi Kapoor, known for not mincing his words when it comes to expressing his political opinions, rallied behind Amitabh Bachchan who has been at the receiving end of Congress' ire following reports that he will be hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-year anniversary event.

The actor told Times Now that given Bachchan's stature in the industry, his participation in the event wasn't out of place. He also slammed the Congress for attacking the actor. He told the channel that he didn't see any reason for the actor to be targeted by the party.

Earlier in the day, reports had emerged that Amitabh Bachchan, who was recently named in the Panama Papers leak, would host an event for the party on 28 May. Indian investigating agencies are probing the Panama Papers leak which revealed the names of several Indian high-profile names who had allegedly stashed away money in tax havens. Bachchan's name was one of them.

However, later Bachchan clarified that he was only participating in one segment of the event, which was related to the girl child. He also said that actor R Madhavan will be hosting the show.

The Congress expressed concern over the kind of message Amitabh Bachchan's hosting of the event would send to investigation agencies overlooking the Panama Papers leak.
