The BJP is in a spree to change the names of the cities and another one to add in the list is Muzaffarnagar, where the riot accused MLA Sangeet Som, has demanded it to be renamed as Laxminagar.

Ahead of this, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had renamed Faizabad district as Ayodhya and Allahabad as Prayagraj. Later, BJP MLA also claimed to rename Agra to ‘Agrawal’ as the name Agra suggests nothing.

Sanget Som, who is accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013, said ““Keeping in mind the sentiments, the culture which was destroyed by invaders, we are trying to restore it. I do not think there is anything wrong in it.”

Targeting the Opposition, Som said, “Names of many cities are to be changed… Muzaffarnagar’s name is to be changed… Muzaffarnagar should be changed to Lakshmi Nagar, this has been demand of people for long.”

Sangeet Som added that, “All I want to say is that Mughals have worked to destroy our culture, especially destroy Hindutva. We are just trying to save the culture. BJP would move forward in this direction.”

Reverberating the Hindutva narrative, Som looked upon the history, and said “Mughals destroyed Indian's culture, especially things related to Hindutva. In 1633, a Nawab named Muzaffar Ali had changed the name of the town. Muzaffarnagar isn’t the original name of the town. Therefore, I demand to change Muzaffarnagar’s name to Laxminagar.”

The election is around the corner and the challenge for the Indian voters is to filter out all these election sops and focus on the issues and vote thereafter.
