Amid an ongoing debate on intolerance, Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan delivered a stirring speech on Saturday, 31 October, at the Indian Institute of Technology's Delhi's convocation ceremony. Rajan chose to emphasis on the issue of tolerance. He said, "excessive political correctness stifles progress".
When asked about whether ideas or behaviour that hurt a particular group of people or an intellectual position should be banned, Rajan said, "Possibly, but a quick resort to bans will chill all debate as everyone will be anguished by ideas they dislike." He called for an improved environment for tolerance and mutual respect.
