Today was an eventful day from the Gujarat High Court's decision to commute the death sentence to 11 convicts into life imprisonment, to Supreme court of India banning the firecrackers sale ahead of Diwali.

1- Godhra train burning case
The Gujarat High Court on Monday commuted the death sentence to 11 convicts, in connection with the 2002 Godhra train burning case, into life imprisonment.
On March 1, 2011, the special SIT (Special Investigation Team) had convicted 31 people under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy. It had acquitted 63.

Out of these 31, 11 people were sentenced to death. 20 were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Those acquitted included the prime accused, Maulana Umarji, the then president of Godhra Municipality, Mohammad Hussain Kalota, Mohammad Ansari and Nanumiya Chaudhary of Gangapur, Uttar Pradesh.

2- Supreme Court bans firecrackers ahead of Diwali

The Supreme Court on Monday restored the ban on the sale of firecrackers till November 1. The court said, while delivering its order, said it wants to test the effect of the ban on air quality after Diwali. The Supreme Court, earlier on October 6, had reserved its order on the review petition over lifting the ban on firecrackers.

A three-judge bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and Abhay Manohar Sapre, was hearing the case.
The top court had temporarily lifted its earlier order suspending the licence for the sale of fire crackers, on September 12, saying a complete ban would be an "extreme step" and a graded approach was needed to curb pollution.

3- Women's cricket breaks new grounds

Interest in women's cricket has seen a major surge over the past couple of years and new research unveiled on Monday by the International Cricket Council (ICC) shows the scale of the impact this summer's Women's Cricket World Cup has had on fans and new participants.
The first study of its kind on women's cricket among sports fans across Australia, England and Wales, India, New Zealand and South Africa was commissioned to mark the start of the ICC Women's Championship and shows a huge boost to the women's game.

4- Grand 'Padmavati' trailer out

The newly launched trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmavati" spells grandeur and focuses on the valour of Rajputs, and not any romantic angle between the characters of Padmavati and the medieval-era Delhi ruler Alauddin Khilji.

5- Four ISIS terrorists killed in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan

At least four terrorists belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group were killed in an airstrike carried out by the security forces in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The airstrike hit the ISIS hideout in Achin district; the Khaama Press quoted the provincial government media office as saying in a statement.
