On the day when the Rajya Sabha devoted its first working day to discuss and debate the crisis in Kashmir triggered by the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani, VHP leader Pravin Togadia slammed subsequent governments for adopting an "apologist" approach towards Islamist terrorism.

He also said that it was wrong to ask the security forces in Kashmir to exercise restrain. This is at a time when the BJP government came under attack from the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha for allegedly using disproportionate force causing over 40 deaths and close to 2,000 injuries that include fatal eye injuries and cases of blinding due to use of rubber pellets.

In a series of tweets, the international Working President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad justified the use of force on Kashmiri civilians citing attacks on the army, Kashmiri Pandits, and Amarnath Yatris.

Togadia's tweets followed Home Minister Rajnath Singh's statement in the Upper House that he called the Jammu and Kashmir government, directing them to use restrain.

He also questioned the practice of sending government doctors to treat protestors.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who opened the debate on the issue in Rajya Sabha today, said that the current situation in the Valley seems to be worse than that in the 1990s which is considered the worst phase of militancy in Kashmir. Countering him, Togadia said that had the then government used force, the current unrest could have been avoided.
