At least 11 people were killed and 34 people were left severely injured after a bus fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Saturday morning. The bus was going from Loran to Poonch, 175 km from state capital Srinagar.

The bus skidded off the road and fell 100 metres into a rocky gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district today, the police said.

“We’ve confirmed 11 deaths and 34 injured people are being treated at different hospitals. We’ve arranged air ambulance for those who are in a critical condition; a chopper will arrive soon from Jammu. The government will extend every possible help,” DDC Poonch, Rahul Yadav said.

The injured people have been immediately admitted to a hospital at Mandi. “The driver could have been speeding around the tight turns,” the police said, adding it is likely he lost control while turning around a tight bend before skidding off the road.

The number of dead may rise as some of the injured people are critical, a police officer said.
