Government to install GPS and panic button in public road transport for safety measures

The road transport ministry has issued deadline to install the GPS(global positioning system) and a panic button in all taxis, buses and public transport vehicles excluding e-rickshaws and three wheelers. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has ordered to install this feature from 1 April 2018.

According to the reports of TOI, ministry has fixed this guideline due to the reports have emerged from various states yet not implemented the order regarding this safety issue.
On 17 January, the union transport ministry tweeted that from 1st April, all the passenger transport vehicles including taxis and buses are to be mandatorily equipped with GPS devices.

This decision has taken for the safety measures for the passengers, although this will not be implemented on the three-wheelers including e-rickshaw since they are open, said officials.

The use of installing the panic button in road transport is to alert the transport as well as police control rooms to take an immediate action when pressed by the passenger in a panic situation, while GPS will help in tracking the public transport vehicles.
