Millions of people across India switched off the light of the homes in a show of unity in battle against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lamps, candles and diyas were lit, torches were switched on and mobile lights were flashed from balconies by citizens who responded to the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM Modi, in a video address on Friday, asked people to use the lights of lamps or candles to “challenge the darkness of coronavirus”. The act, according to the PM, will send a powerful message to the world that has been extensively infected by the pathogen.

Several users shared the images of themselves taking part in the 9 pm – 9 minutes initiative. They were also seen abiding by the norms of social distancing while doing so.
