A three-year-old in Kerala has been tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of cases in the country to 40.

The kid had visited Italy along with his parents and had returned last Saturday. The family went through thermal screening at the Kochi airport as soon as they landed.

The family was kept under quarantine at a hospital where the kid showed the symptoms. The samples of the kid tested positive after they were sent for analysis at the National Institute of Virology lab at Alappuzha. The samples of the parents have also been sent for analysis.

This is the sixth case of coronavirus in the state. Three of the first cases reported from Kerala in January were discharged last month.

On Sunday, five of a family in Kerala were tested positive for coronavirus. The state health minister KK Shailaja stated that three of the infected persons returned from Italy and did not mention it at the airport, which is why they were not screened.

A couple and their 26-year-old son, who had visited Italy, visited their relatives on return, KK Shailaja said. All five are in hospital under observation. The parents of the couple, who lived with them, have also been hospitalised as precautionary measure, said sources.
