Amid the outcry over the gangrape of a mother-daughter duo in Bulandshahr on 29 July, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav alleged on 4 August that it was a political conspiracy and the opposition parties were conspiring to defame his government and stall development in the state.
"There are political parties which are trying to politicise the matter, in view of upcoming polls,"Akhilesh Yadav told the media.
He further alleged that some political outfits are meeting the victims and misguiding them.
"These politicians are meeting the victims behind closed doors and misguiding them. Is this not politics?" Yadav was quoted as saying.
He condemned the incident and said that his government was taking firm steps to ensure speedy justice to the victim.
