In a shocking incident reported from Bihar’s Gaya, at least 14 people have been arrested and over 60 named as accused after a woman was burnt alive and her family beaten on suspicion of witchcraft on November 5.

The arrested included nine women, all local residents, who blocked police during their rescue operation.

On Sunday, the victim, identified as, Rita Devi, a woman from a scheduled caste community, was accused of being a 'witch' and some villagers burnt her alive. Her family was beaten up. A complaint was registered against the villagers by Rita Devi's family.

Police arrived at Rita Devi's residence on Thursday and recorded the statements of her family and other witnesses. SSP Harpreet Kaur said that a total of 68 people have been named as accused in the case.

"Raids are being conducted to arrest those absconding. We have ordered the attachment of properties of those involved in the crime. We have also ordered security and financial assistance for the victim's family," the official said.

Rita Devi was set ablaze alive at her residence after locals declared her a witch on Saturday evening. Villagers reportedly attacked and forced the local police team to return from the spot when they tried to rescue the 45-year-old woman.

According to police, case under sections 302 and 436 of the IPC and provisions of Witchcraft Act has been lodged. A search is underway to trace and nab the men accused in the murder.
