Amritsar Train Accident: Train services resume in Choura Bazar, where train rammed over crowd killing 60 on Dussehra night

The train tragedy which struck Amritsar on the day of Dussehra, when scores of people were watching the burning of Ravana's effigy, a train had mowed down 60 people leaving 50 injured.

As per the latest development in the case, the train route which was blocked since last two days and many trains were diverted or cancelled which had to pass from the same route, has now resumed its services with immediate effect.

As per initial reports, police are looking for the organisers of the event who are still on run. In a video clip, the organisers are heard saying, "Madam, look here, these people don't care about standing on tracks. Over 5,000 people are (standing) on (railway tracks) lines for you and even if 500 trains pass by, they will not move."

Arvind Kumar, the driver of the train, in a written statement to the Railways administration has said that he did apply the brakes and had started honking from a long distance but could'ny stop the train. He even said that he had to speed up afterwards as people started throwing stones on the train.

"Despite applying emergency brake, some people were run over by the train. The train was almost coming to a halt when a very large crowd started attacking the train by throwing stones. Considering the safety of my passengers, I proceeded with the train,” Kumar was quoted as saying in his statement by Indian Express.

The politicisation of this tragedy is happening all over as the BJP is targetting Congress MLA and State Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife, who were present in the function.
