Amarnath Yatra suspended after landslide leads to blockage of Jammu-Srinagar Highway

News Agencies | Updated on: 13 February 2017, 3:35 IST

The Amarnath yatra was suspended on Saturday, 8 August, after a landslide triggered by heavy rains led to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the Udhampur district of the state.

"Due to heavy rains, a massive landslide closed the 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Kheri in Udhampur district late last night," SSP Traffic National Highway, Sanjay Kotwal said.

The authorities have also suspended the Amarnath yatra from Jammu base camp, he said, adding the other traffic was also not allowed on the highway.

The men and machines of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working to clear the landslide and the highway is expected to reopen by this evening, he said.

Some vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway, he added.
