
HRD Minister Smriti Irani disclosed on 22 July that 75 cases of sexual harassment cases in higher educational institutes were reported between April, 2014 and March, 2015. Out of these, 27 cases are from Delhi alone.
The annual report by the University Grants Commission compiled the list from 84 universities across the country. These include sexual harassment cases against women lecturers, professors and research scholars.
The highest figure is from the capital, followed by Uttar Pradesh, which is 23. Haryana, Odisha had seven and six respectively. Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Tripura reported two cases, while Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttrakhand, Kerala, Karnataka and Assam saw one case each. The number also includes complaints from Sardar Vallabhai National Institute of Technology, Indira Gandhi National Open University and National University of Educational Planning and Administration in Delhi.
She made a special mention of complaints from Punjab and Jadavpur University, The Energy Research Institute and St. Stephens College.
