In yet another incident of crime against women, a woman, aged 25, tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Ganga after being allegedly raped by her uncle, a head constable, several times over the last two years, police said on Monday.

The woman, a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district, had jumped into the river on Sunday but was rescued by divers and police officials, Deputy Commissioner of Police Pramod Kumar said.

A case has been lodged in the matter based on the woman's complaint.

In the complaint, the victim alleged that her uncle had invited her family to Allahabad to attend Kumbh in 2019. In the time of her stay, her uncle took her to a hotel where he gave her sedated cold drink. After she fell unconscious, he raped her and even made a video to blackmail the woman, she said.

Furthermore, the woman claimed that her uncle raped her many times in Allahabad and Kanpur over the past two years.

The DSP said, "When her uncle got to know that she was pregnant, he allegedly asked her to abort the pregnancy by giving her a pill".

Earlier, the accused and his son again took her to a room in Kanpur’s Chakeri area where they made another video of her to further blackmail her.

"When she resisted, they started to hit her and threatened her with dire consequences. After escaping from their clutches, the woman made a call to the police helpline number and jumped into the river, but was saved by PRV personnel," the DCP said.

A case under applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code has been filed against the police constable and his son. However, the father and son duo have not been arrested yet.

According to DCP (Traffic) BBGTS Murthy, the accused cop will be suspended after recording the victim's statement before the magistrate.

A medical analysis of the victim would also be conducted in order to substantiate the charges, he said.
