In a horrifying incident of crime reported from UP’s Pilibhit district, a 16-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped, was found dead in a sugarcane field, police said on Sunday.

The unfortunate incident happened on Saturday in a village which falls under the jurisdiction of the Barkhera police station.

The victim’s family members have alleged that the girl was gang-raped and then killed.

In his police complaint, the victim’s father stated that his daughter had gone for her coaching classes on Saturday. When she did not come back home till 5 pm, her family members started looking for her and approached the police.

Cops recovered the dead body of the teen girl in a bare condition in sugarcane field near her village at around 11 pm, SP Dinesh Kumar said.

Several Samajwadi Party leaders and BJP MLAs had also reached the crime spot.

There were injury marks on the body and a piece of cloth was found shoved into her mouth, police said, further adding that her books, bag, cycle and shoes were found lying a few metres away from the dead body.

According to the police, "Four beer bottles, snacks and cigarette butts were also recovered from the crime spot, which suggests that there is a possibility of gang-rape, after which the girl was killed".

Police also suspect a love angle after which the victim’s paramour had been held and is being interrogated with reference to the crime.

"All angles, including that of gang rape, are being probed and it cannot be ruled out. Six people have been taken into police custody and are being interrogated," police said.

On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s family, a case has been lodged against one named accused and five other unknown individuals under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act, police said.

The dead body of the deceased victim has been sent for autopsy, police said.

Four separate police teams have been set-up to investigate the case.
