'Period' director Raika Zahatabati on winning oscar: 'Not crying as I'm on my periods but...'

Mensuration has been a serious problem in remote areas since ages, in rural areas women's don't even know what is pad and uses dirty clothes which is very harmful to a woman. Based on this serious issue Guneet Monga made a documentary named 'Period: End of Sentence'.

This documentary was nominated in Oscar and has also won The Best Documentary Award. Director Zahatabati is happy and also in a bit shock as according to her it was a normal documentary and she never thought that it will go till Oscar or will also win an award. This documentary has been directed by Raika Zahatabati and is produced by Indian producer Guneet Monga's Shikhiya Entertainment.

This documentary is part of the 'ThePad Project' started by students of Los Angeles School and their teacher Milisia Burton. Zahatabati, while accepting the Oscar award, said, "I am not crying because my periods are going on or anything. I do not believe any film made on menstruation can win Oscars.

Whereas, Burton also dedicated this award to her school and added that this project was born only because of my students and the people of India who wanted change.

Period: End of Sentence is a story of women living in the rural area Hapur, outskirts of Delhi, who raises her voice against the atrocities women are facing due to the ritual belief related to mensuration. Sneha who essayed the leading role in the documentary is the first women of her village who entered the industry and went to America for Oscars.

After a decade India received an Oscar award after Slumdog Millionaire in 2009. This is a proud moment for all Indians and Industry.
