Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema was arrested in Paris on Wednesday, 4 November, over an alleged attempt to blackmail a French international teammate, AFP reported.
The 27-year old footballer, who missed Real Madrid's Champions League game against PSG on Tuesday due to an injury, was placed in judicial police custody at around 9 am this morning.
While the details of the case are not yet known, it allegedly includes an extortion attempt on Mathieu Valbuena, who now plays for Lyon, over a sex tape. Earlier, ex-Liverpool forward Djibril Cisse was detained, and later released, over the same case.
Benzema is currently recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered on international duty, and was expected to back for Real Madrid this week. His detention in Paris, however, will come as a major setback for Rafa Benitez's side.
