I-League debutants Aizawl FC's hopes of staying on in the I-League suffered a major jolt on Monday, 11 April, when the club went down by a solitary goal to fellow strugglers Salgaocar in their final home game of the season.
Scottish striker Darryl Duffy scored from a free-kick for Salgaocar in the first half to give the visitors the lead going into half-time.
Aizawl, who dominated possession, created quite a few chances throughout the game but failed to get the ball inside the net, as the Santosh Kashyap-coached Salgaocar held on for a crucial 1-0 victory.
With the loss, Aizawl FC have gone down to 8th in the 9-team league, having played a game more than bottom-of-the-table Mumbai FC, who, like Aizawl, have garnered 13 points so far.
With their sole remaining match of the season against an in-form DSK Shivajians side later this week, Aizawl FC are now on the verge of relegation.
A win against DSK may not be enough, as the club will have to be dependent on other results to ensure survival for another season.
