Beware! Here are India's 22 fake universities

According to the Minster of Human Resource and Development, Smriti Irani, India has as many as 22 'fake' universities.

Of these 22, nine are in Uttar Pradesh, five in Delhi, two in West Bengal and one each in Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

"As per information available with the UGC, there are 22 universities (in the country) which have been listed in the UGC list of fake universities and are functioning in contravention or violation of the UGC Act, 1956, in different parts of the country," Irani told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, 5 May.

Rajya Sabha was informed that states have been asked to initiate action against the 22 universities.

Tamil Nadu

  1. D.D.B. Sanskrit University, Putur, Trichi, Tamil Nadu.

West Bengal

  1. Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine, Kolkatta.

  5. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open University), Achaltal, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.

  6. Uttar Pradesh Vishwavidyalaya, Kosi Kalan, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.

  7. Maharana Pratap Shiksha Niketan Vishwavidyalaya, Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh.

  8. Indraprastha Shiksha Parishad, Institutional Area,Khoda,Makanpur,Noida Phase-II, Uttar Pradesh.

Odisha

The MHRD is also in the process of writing to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to seek a list of all fake universities and institutions abroad so that students are not misled.

The Centre has started a portal "KnowYourCollege" and a mobileApp providing details about universities and colleges.

"It is an endeavour to persistently act on injustices meted out to our students through such fake institutions through protection given by the regulator," she said, asking members to share information on fake institutions with UGC.
