Virat Kohli on brink of becoming first Indian cricketer to achieve this feat in T20I

Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday will have an opportunity to add yet another massive record to his already noteworthy career when India lock horns against West Indies in Mumbai later this evening.

The 31 year old is just six runs away from reaching 1000 T20I runs mark and in the process, he will go on to become the first Indian cricketer to attain this feat. New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (1430) and Colin Munro (1000) are the only two cricketers in the world to have achieved this record.

In the second T20I match on Sunday, Virat Kohli outdid Rohit Sharma to regain the top spot in the T20I highest run scorers list. While Kohil has cumulated 2,563 runs in T20I cricket, Rohit has 2,562 runs under his belt in the format. Kohli was just three runs short from Rohit’s mark, when the innings began.

But Rohit Sharma, who took the crease as an opener for the men in blue, knocked just 15 runs before he was dismissed by Jason Holder. When Kholi came out to bat, he needed 18 runs to exceed Rohit’s mark and become the leading run-getter in the shortest format of the game. Kohli was dismissed for 19 after he tried to hit the ball for a six, but was caught by Lendl Simmons. But the Indian skipper managed to surpass Rohit’s mark.

Indian team will have to address many lapses laid bare by the West Indies in the second T20I when two teams sqare off in what promises to be a fascinating series finale. The series is 1-1 after the Caribbean side turned the table in the second T20I match in Thiruvananthapuram.
