The series decider between India and West Indies looked like slipping through the fingers of the Indian team when Skipper Virat Kohli succumbed to Keemo Paul’s delivery in the first ball of the 47th over.

With only tail-enders left to bat, the Indian skipper looked keyed up as he was heading back to the pavillion while Ravindra Jadeja and Shradul Thakur hatched an impressive chase in such a crutial game. Jadeja, speaking at the post match presentation, reveal what he told Shardul as the duo pulled off a valiant chase to clinch the series for India.

Jadeja and Shardul, stood firm against the West Indies bowling attack, with the latter smashing a four and a six early in his innings. After which, the two played every ball with caution and kept rotating the strike. The men in blue won the series with eight balls to spare.

“I told myself that I need to play till the last ball,” Jadeja stated on Sunday. “Yes, my innings was crucial because it was the decider. When I went in, my aim was to just stay with Virat and rotate the strike.”

Virat Kohli’s dismissal had many up on their toes as India looked on the verge of losing the series but Shardul and Jadeja impressed everyone with their composure and maturity in the tense chase.

India is so used to the likes of Virat Kohli finishing the game. It is not too often that Rohit and Kohli were not at the crease in such a vital stage of the game.

Jadeja, speaking to journalists, revealed that he told Shardul how good the wicket was and India was ensured of a win if the two played till the last ball. “When Shardul (Thakur) came in, I told him the wicket was good, the ball was coming on nicely so we were thinking like Virat and I were. And that was, if we play till the last ball and treat every ball on its merit, we will win,” said Jadeja post the match.
