Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri has eulogized the Indian cricket team and its captain Virat Kohli for their relentless effort in the ICC World Cup 2019, where the failed to register a spot in the final after losing to New Zealand at Old Trafford cricket groung on Wednesday.

“This team you’ve led has played the kind of cricket to make all of us proud, @imVkohli. It was a fantastic journey that fell a few yards short, but I’m sure you boys will pick yourselves up soon. Very proud of Team India,” Chhetri tweeted.

Coming into this ICC World Cup 2019, the men in blue were tipped to be one of the favourites to lift the trophy, all through team India lived up to their favourite tag as they won seven out of their eight fixtures with the one against New Zealand being abandoned due to rain. India lost to England but still carried on to top the points table with 15 points.

In the semi final against New Zealand, who narrowly made it to the knockout stages finishing fourth on the points table, team India were firm favourites to win. But despite bundeling up the black caps for 239/8 in stipulated 50 overs, India were crushed by the Kiwis formidable bowling attack led by Matt Henry (3/37) on the reserve day as the play could not be completed on the scheduled day bacause of inclement weather.

India lost their first four wickets for just 24 runs within 10 overs before Ravindra Jadeja (77) and MS Dhoni (50) shared a 116 run seventh wicket partnership to raise hope for an unlikely victory, however, in the end India succunbed to 18 runs defeat.
