India beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets; Rohit Sharma scores his fifth century of this World Cup

India beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets in their last match of the preliminary stage of this World Cup. Rohit Sharma scored a record fifth century of this World Cup, while KL Rahul scored his first.

Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and elected to bat first. Sri Lanka lost an early wicket as Jasprit Bumrah gave India its first breakthrough. After that Sri Lanka lost four early wickets before Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne notched up a 100 run partnership. Mathews went on to score his first century of this World Cup before he was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah for 113 runs.


Sri Lanka scored 264-7 in 50 overs, with the help of Lahiru’s 53 and Dhananjaya de Silva’s 29 runs.

In reply, Indian opener Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started with a bang as they notched up the highest opening partnership of this World Cup. Both Rohit and Rahul scored a fabulous hundred as India chased down the target in 43.3 overs. Indian skipper Virat Kohli remained unbeaten at 34 runs.

Rohit Sharma was awarded the man of the match for his 103 off 94 balls. Jasprit Bumrah scalped 3 wickets to his name in the first innings.
