News Agencies | Updated on: 13 February 2017, 4:40 IST

BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya was on 17 September night admitted in a top city hospital following complaints of chest pain.

The 75-year-old Dalmiya, who has not been keeping good health for the past few months, was rushed to the BM Birla heart Research Institute by the family members.

"Jagmohan Dalmiya was today admitted to the BM Birla Hospital after 9 pm after he was brought here with complaints of chest pain. A medical team has been assigned and they are monitoring his health," a hospital source said. According to the last information received, Dalmiya underwent heart surgery after a blockage was found.

"Dalmiya is undergoing a heart surgery currently due to a blockage," a senior CAB official present at the hospital said.

Dalmiya's son Abhishek and former India captain Sourav Ganguly were with him when he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.

Minister in-charge of sports (West Bengal) Arup Biswas and top Cricket Association of Bengal officials rushed to the hospital immediately after hearing the news.

On Friday morning, a medical bulletin from the hospital said that Dalmiya 'was in a better condition with improvement in ECG. He is being monitored at the hospital with medication as per protocol.' The BCCI is expected to wait for at least 72 hours to take a call on Dalmiya's future as president.

That Dalmiya's health has been an issue was an open secret in the Indian cricket circle for quite some time after he took over the BCCI president's post in March, this year. Due to Dalmiya's health conditions, it has been secretary Anurag Thakur who has called the shots. Since the doctors advised him against travelling, the major BCCI meetings were being held in Kolkata in recent times.

A seasoned cricket administrator, Dalmiya has been associated with BCCI for over three decades.

He has been instrumental in bringing the Reliance World Cup in India back in 1987 and also was the man who worked to make BCCI the richest board in the world. Along with IS Bindra, Dalmiya also got the 1996 World Cup being hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

During the AGM in March this year, Dalmiya emerged as a consensus candidate and was elected president of the board for the second time unopposed while there was election for all the other office-bearer's posts.
