Manoj Bajpai: Budhia Singh has a message for both parents and sports authorities in India

Manoj Bajpai, one of India's critically-acclaimed actors, is back with an interesting movie -- Budhia Singh.

Based on the real-life story of a young running star, the film is a commercial one and not an indie movie, as most would perceive it to be.

Talking to a news agency recently, Bajpai revealed important details about the film, his experience while shooting for it, and why Budhia Singh is a different film. Excerpts:

You play a sports coach in Budhia Singh. How sporty are you in real life?

I am very fascinated with running. I run every morning for nine kilometres. Fitness is very important in my life so playing a coach wasn't difficult.

So did you undertake any special preparation for the role?

I underwent a lot of preparation. Soumendra Padhi, the director, told me to attend judo classes because in a few shots in the film I am imparting judo training. I did a workshop with the kid actors and I saw lot of video clips of Biranchi Das (the coach) and tried to bring elements of him on the big screen. I worked on my role for almost a month.

Did you enjoy learning judo?

It was very difficult the few days that I went for training; I always prayed and hoped that I didn't break my leg or my bones. A trainer from Satara and one from Mumbai taught me few tricks and I managed.

What is the USP of Budhia Singh?

There is a small message in the film: Parents should see one special talent of their kids and should encourage that talent. Also, there is a message to the sports authorities that they should find such talent and give them a platform to excel.

There is a lot of talent in our country but unfortunately, there are very few talent spotters. A person who found the talent in Budhia Singh, Biranchi Das, too was questioned and ultimately Budhia was taken away from him. Today, at the age of 14, Budhia is without any trainer.

What is your take on this film?

I am very proud that I am part of this film...it will be one of the greatest films of my career. This film will help him get the support from everyone. I am very sure when the film will release, 14-year old Budhia's dream of running in Olympics after he turns 18 will come true.

What is next?

Missing and Saat Uchakkey. The latter is stuck with the Censors now. We have approached the tribunal and when they give us the green signal, we shall go ahead with the release.
