Govt teacher's son demands dowry from bride's family; groom's insensitive act caught on cam

Dowry is one of the old customs that still existed in many parts of India. Despite anti-dowry laws in India, it is still a common illegal practice. Recently, a shameful incident took place in Bihar where a groom refused to marry after the bride’s family failed to fulfill his demands.

The shocking thing is that the groom feels no shame in demanding the dowry in front of the camera.

His insensitive gesture has drawn flak online.

The groom is a government servant and his father is a government teacher. Despite being well educated, the groom is heard saying that he will not marry the woman if his demands are not met.

 

The incident took place in the Chappalpur village in Bihar. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

In the now-viral clip, the groom says, “Abhi tak humko cash nahi mila hai. Samaan sab gachha huya tha woh nahi mila hai. Ek chain gachha huya tha woh bhi nahi mila hai (I have not received the cash till now. I have not got all the things that were promised. Even the chain hasn’t come).”

“Toh kis aadhaar par hum shaadi kare? (So, on what basis do I get married),” he continues, even threatening to take his wedding party back without marrying the woman. When countered by the person capturing the incident on camera that it’s wrong to ask for dowry, the groom retorts, “Kaun kehta hai ki dahej nahi chalta hai (Who says dowry is not practiced)?”

He further claimed that dowry is still a common practice and he continued to threaten that he will not marry the woman.

While the bride told that most of his demands have been met and only Rs 1 lakh is left, which she said will be paid later.

However, the adamant groom was not ready on this condition and said that he has to be given everything right now, including the gold chain and ring.

The person who was filming the incident asked him to think over his actions again. The man replies, “Agar aisa hi baat tha toh apni aukaat wale ke saath sochte. Sarkari naukri wale ke saath kyun kiya?”

Meanwhile, netizens slammed the man. Many said that dowry on paper may be a punishable offence but the practice still exists in society. While some people demand to put him behind the bar.
