Doctors left baffled after finding dozen squirming fly larvae in man’s eye

There are various bizarre cases that doctors have to encounter. One such case has been reported in France where doctors discovered a dozen eggs of fly inside a man’s eye.

The case came to light when an unnamed man from France, who is reportedly 53-year-old, admitted himself to the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne and was complaining of irritation in his right eye.


When doctors did the scan of his right eye, they were left shocked after examining his eye.

According to a report that appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, there were over a dozen mobile, translucent larvae around the 53-year-old man’s cornea.

The man told doctors that he had been gardening near a horse and sheep farm the same day when he felt something enter his eye.

After identifying the problem, doctors used forceps to physically remove all the larvae from the man’s eye.

According to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the doctors found more larvae inside the conjunctiva, the membrane lining the eyelid, and the white parts of the eye.

After extracting the creatures from man’s eye, the doctors identified them as Oestrus ovis larvae which are also known as the sheep bot fly.

Following the procedure, the man was diagnosed with external ophthalmomyiasis.

"An infestation of the outer structures of the eye by fly larvae," the doctors from the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne wrote in the report.

According to experts, larvae can’t be removed easily if they entered the eye. A person has to take help from medical experts and they can only remove it by using forceps.

Meanwhile, a follow-up appointment with the doctors revealed that the 53-year-old man completely recovered.
