The Hakimullah Mehsud faction of the Tehriki Taliban has claimed responsibility of the murder of the renowned Pakistani Qawwali singer, Amjad Sabri.

Amajad Sabri of the Sabri brothers was shot dead by unidentified armed assailants in the Liaquatabad area of Karachi on 22 June. According to local media reports, the outfit's spokesperson Qari Saifullah Mehsud said that Sabri was killed for his "blasphemous" Qawwalis.

The singer was shot at by unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle. He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Ajmad was a part of the famed Sabri group, which was started by the late Ghulam Farid Sabri and his younger brother Haji Maqbool Ahmed Sabri.

The Sabri brothers, who are connected to the Chishti order, were well known for their Sufi Qawwali. The globally well-known group has performed in India several times. The Sabri group is credited with having taken Qawwali to the West in 1970s.
