Unknown assailants opened fire at a taxi bus here, killing 11 passengers who were on their way back from a funeral service in Gauteng Province on Sunday.

The South African Police Service told CNN that the 11 taxi drivers killed were among 17 people who were heading back to Johannesburg from the funeral in Gauteng Province.
Authorities said the incident occurred when gunmen, who were hiding in the bushes, suddenly intercepted the taxi bus and opened fire indiscriminately between the towns of Colenso and Weenen, as per the report.

Among the remaining six people, four of them were critically injured and two others escaped unhurt.

The police said that the motive of the attack and identities of the gunmen were still not clear, as per the report.

South African police General Khehla Sitole said, "We will wait for the investigation to advance before speculating on a motive."
