A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a man to prison, including 2000 lashes, for expressing his atheism in a series of posts on Twitter.

An Al-Watan report says that the 28-year-old man has admitted to being an atheist and refused to repent. He said he has his own set of beliefs and has the right to express them.

The 'religious police' found 600 tweets denying the existence of God, ridiculing the verses of the Quran and accusing the Prophet and his teachings of fuelling hostilities. The court has also fined him 20,000 Riyals.

According to a new law by late Saudi King Abdullah, the atheists were defined as terrorists , revealed the Human Rights Watch.
