WATCH: Mamata needs a better team, says Kolkata ex-Army doc

Elections are not just about politicians. They are about people and issues. And what really drives their vote.

Catch is, therefore, starting a 'Meet the Voter' series to capture what different impact groups in the poll-bound states are feeling. This is true insight into the upcoming assembly elections: up-close and hyper-personal.

Dr Rathin Brajabasi is a retired Army Brigadier, who currently heads the Marwadi Charitable Trust Hospital in Kolkata.

He lives with a large family in Salt Lake, most of whom have different political preferences. Brajabasi himself supports the Narendra Modi government at the national level.

However, he feels that the BJP in Bengal is weak, and cannot make much of a mark in these Assembly elections. Instead, he sees a close contest brewing between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the CPI(M)-Congress alliance.

"The Trinamool, of course, has got the advantage because it has done a lot of work mainly in the rural areas. The urban voters are a little disillusioned because expectations are always high. However, the CPI(M)-Congress alliance against the Trinamool might cause a problem for Mamata," he says.

Brajabasi is unsure if there's a tacit understanding between the BJP and TMC in Bengal. "It could be the case, especially because the ruling dispensation is slow on the Saradha chit fund scam and, as a quid pro quo, it can get TMC's support in key legislative Bills which are to be passed in the Rajya Sabha. It may be a tacit understanding just to get the Bills through. And if that is the case, so be it," he says.

The retired Brigadier is going to vote for the Trinamool Congress, chiefly because of the clean image he feels that Mamata Banerjee has maintained. "I can't say the same for her subordinates. I hope, if she wins, she picks a better team and distances herself from all these elements that bring her government a lot of disrepute. The CPI(M) also had its own quota of rogue elements."
