BJP seeks removal of West Bengal Chief Secretary over Mamata Banerjee-EC row

A BJP delegation on 16 April called on the state CEO in Kolkata and demanded that the West Bengal Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee be removed from his post for answering a notice of the Election Commission on behalf of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Earlier this week, the Election Commission sent a showcause notice to the Chief Minister for her remarks at a TMC election rally, where she promised to make Asansol a separate district.

"It has been brought to our notice that she made a promise of creation of Asansol district and also made certain other utterances, for which the showcause has been issued," Chief Election Commissioner Naseem Zaidi told the media last week.

State Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee responded to the EC, saying that Banerjee did not violate the election code in her rally speech.

The BJP delegation insisted that by answering on Banerjee's behalf the top official has worked as a TMC agent.
