UEFA Euro 2016: Switzerland, Wales notch up wins; England held by Russia

A Fabian Schar goal proved to be enough as Switzerland edged out Albania 1-0 in a Group A clash in Lens at the UEFA Euro Cup on Saturday, 11 June.

Playing against a 10-men Albanian side for most of the game, after Lorik Cana was sent off in the first half, Switzerland failed to dominate proceedings and had to rely on goalkeeper Jan Sommer making two outstanding saves to fend off the Euro debutants.

In the second game of the day, Wales posted a win in their debut at the European Championships, after goals from Gareth Bale and Hal Robson-Kanu.

Bale had given his side the lead in the first half through a free kick, before Ondrej Duda equalised for Slovakia in the 61st minute. Twenty minutes later, Robson-Kanu scored from close range to seal a historic 2-1 win for Wales.

In the final game of the day, England dropped two points against Russia, after a late Vasili Berezutski goal for Russia cancelled out Eric Dier's thunderous strike from a free kick.

England failed to impress throughout the 90 minutes, and were wasteful in the final third, giving Russia the chance to pick up a point in the closing stages of the game.

Results:

Switzerland 1-0 Albania

Wales 2-1 Slovakia

England 1-1 Russia
