Marek Hamsik grabbed the spotlight as Slovakia claimed their first win at a European Championship after defeating Russia 2-1 in their second Group B match in Lille on Wednesday, 15 June.

Hamsik provided a measured pass to Vladimir Weiss, who put Slovakia ahead in the 32nd minute before the Napoli star doubled the lead in style on the stroke of half-time.

Although Russia tried to stage a comeback when Denis Glushakov pulled one back in the 80th minute, Slovakia held their one-goal lead until the final whistle.

With the win, Slovakia are second in the points table and have put pressure on their Group B rivals before England take on Wales in Lens on Thursday, 16 June.

Meanwhile, Russia are last in the table and need to beat Wales in their final group game to keep hopes of reaching the last 16 stage alive.

In the other two games of the day, Romania and Switzerland played out a 1-1 draw, while France defeated minnows Albania 2-0.
