Roger Federer continued his quest for a sixth US Open title on Saturday, 5 September, with a straight sets win over German opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber in the 3rd round at Flushing Meadows. The 17-time Grand Slam champion overcame Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to set up a fourth round clash with American John Isner.

It was a field day for other top seeds as well, as the likes of Wawrinka, Murray and Halep booked their place in the next round with comfortable victories. French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka produced a clinical performance to beat Belgium's Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-4, while Andy Murray disposed off Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in the 3rd round match.

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych came back from one set down to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-7 (2), 7-6 (7), 6-3, 6-3, and book a 4th round clash with Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Women's second seed Simona Halep, meanwhile, was in fine form as well, as she defeated American Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-2 to progress to the 4th round. Victoria Azarenka, on the other hand, triumphed 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, after being involved in a thrilling encounter with 11th seed Angelique Kerber.
