Roger Federer was in imperious form at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, 20 January, as he brushed aside the challenge of Alexandr Dolgopolov to move to the third round.

Federer defeated Dolgopolov in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1, in a lop-sided contest in Melbourne, paving the way for a third-round meeting with Grigor Dimitrov.

In the women's singles section, World no 1 Serena Williams continued her quest for a 22nd major title with a comfortable win in straight sets over Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan in the second round.

Serena, who is defending her title in Melbourne, dropped only three games throughout the match, winning it by a scoreline of 6-1, 6-2.

Maria Sharapova too had little trouble in getting past Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, as she won the match 6-2, 6-1 to move into the third round.

On the other hand, Kei Nishikori progressed to the next round as well, with a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over USA's Austin Krajicek.
