Thursday saw the release of 2017's first Mammootty starrer The Great Father. Jointly produced by Malayalam actor Prithviraj, cinematographer Santhosh Sivan, Tamil actor Arya and film producer Shaji Nadeshan, the film marks the directorial debut of Haneef Adeni. The Great Father also stars Arya, Sneha, Mia George and Babu Anikha.

On its opening day, the Mammootty starrer is said to have broken the Rajinikanth's Kabali opening day record to become the highest opener at the Kerala Box Office. The film is said to have collected Rs. 4.31 crore.

The Great Father has now said to have overtaken the opening weekend collections of Mohanlal blockbuster Pulimurugan. The Mammookka film also emerged as the fastest Rs. 20 crore grosser at the Kerala Box Office.

Mammootty took to his Facebook page to confirm the box office numbers.

"I want to thank each and every one of you in making the Great Father such a huge success! It's broken the first day opening collection record, the fastest 20 crores collection to date and all of this with a relatively modest 6 crores budget and made by a first time director. This is a celebration and an eye opener to the size and power of the Malayalam audience like no other ! Here is wishing for our industry to continue growing bigger and better so we can make even better and bolder films!!"(SIC)
