That remakes of most South Indian films are money churners in Bollywood is a given. In fact, most of the Rs 100 crore blockbusters in Hindi cinema of late, are actually these remakes. The first such film to cross the magical Rs 100 crore in Bollywood was the Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini, which was the remake of Tamil film by the same name. Other Rs 100 crore grossers like Singham, Son of Sardaar, Holiday, Ready, Rowdy Rathore, Bodyguard and Kick, are all remakes too.

Here are five films from the Southern film industry that could do well as Bollywood remakes:

01
Hello
  • Year: 2007
  • Director: Rafi Mecartin
  • Language: Malayalam
  • Original cast: Mohanlal and Parvathy Melton

Mohanlal's Hello, a comic thriller, was a clean family entertainer. The character of a drunk lawyer Shivaraman, who spends more time in bars than in courts, was brilliant portrayed by Mohanlal. If you imagine the film to be remade in Bollywood, then the role of Shivaraman should be essayed by Akshay Kumar.

Though he cannot be compared to Mohanlal's acting caliber, yet when it comes to 'versatility' in Bollywood Akshay easily tops all his superstar contemporaries. Probably the only superstar who is balancing his stardom with content based films like Special 26, OMG, Baby, Airlift and no brainers like Rowdy Rathore, Khiladi 786 and Singh Is Bliing. Plus, his successful films like Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyya, De Dana Dan and Khatta Meetha were remakes of Mohanlal starrers in Malayalam.

USP: Perfect comedy thriller

Bollywood cast should be: Akshay Kumar and Kriti Sanon

02
How Old Are You
  • Year: 2014
  • Director: Rosshan Andrrews
  • Language: Malayalam
  • Original cast: Manju Warrier and Kunchacko Boban

How Old Are You marks the comeback of Malayalm actress Manju Warrier after a gap of 15 years. The move was well received by Malayalam cinema lovers. The story revolves around a married woman, Nirupama Raajeev, who despite facing many difficult situations, transforms herself to achieve her life time dream of meeting the Indian President.

Manju Warrier made a grand comeback with the powerful role of Nirupama, which inspired Tamil actress Jyothika to make a comeback in Tamil cinema with the film's remake 36 Vayadhinile. The heroine oriented film can be remade in Hindi with Vidya Balan, who is tailor-made for essaying such characters.

USP: Heroine oriented film with a strong message

Bollywood cast should be: Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi

03
Super
  • Year: 2010
  • Director: Upendra
  • Language: Kannada
  • Original cast: Upendra and Nayantara

Super was one of the most anticipated films in 2010 as it was being helmed by Upendra, after a gap of 10 years. The script was also penned by him and he starred opposite Nayantara in the film. Super is a futuristic film, which depicts how India will look in the year 2020.

For a change, you can see most Indians as millionaires and foreigners as taxi drivers! This film will be controversial for sure if it is remade in Bollywood but at the same time movie lovers can see the darling of the masses Salman Khan as a real patriot, who loves his country more than his life. Salman Khan should give a call to his Bajirangi Bhaijaan co-producer Rockline Venkatesh to get the rights of this Kannada film.

USP: Salman Khan again in a larger than life role with patriotism as its backdrop. The film will also mark the comeback project of Bajrangi Bhaijaan makers, Salman and R Venkatesh.

Bollywood cast should be: Salman Khan and Deepika Padukone

04
Mumbai Police

  • Year: 2013
  • Director: Rosshan Andrrews
  • Language: Malayalam
  • Original cast: Prithviraj, Jayasurya and Rahman

One of the most remarkable thrillers from the Malayalam film industry, Mumbai Police will strike the right chord in Bollywood if it is executed as well as Rosshan Andrrew's original. Full credit should go to actor Prithviraj for taking a big risk and accepting an unconventional role which other actors may have had second thoughts about.

The actor has brilliantly evolved into an intense and character-driven role and delivered an outstanding performance. John Abraham, who is currently busy shooting for Dishoom and Force 2 should start working on the Bollywood remake.

USP: Bold theme with A-list actors in the lead

Bollywood cast should be: John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Anil Kapoor

05
Twenty Twenty
  • Year: 2008
  • Director: Joshi
  • Language: Malayalam
  • Original cast: Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Jayaram, Dileep,... well pretty much the entire Malayalam film industry!

A film featuring all the superstars of the industry will be a great feat for any film maker. Actor Dileep made history in Mollywood with this film. It starred Mollywood heavyweights like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Jayaram and Dileep himself in a small role.

The actor-turned-producer also managed to get young actors of the time like Prithviraj, Kunchacko Boban and Indrajith Sukumaran. What's more? Dileep also roped in each and every member of the Malayalam film industry for his dream film. He produced this film on behalf of AMMA foundation (Association of Malayalam Movie Arts), as a fundraiser to financially support struggling actors in the Malayalam film industry.

Twenty Twenty was a complete entertainer. Mammooty and Mohanlal's fans were in for a double treat thanks to the action sequences between their superstars on screen. In Bollywood, it would be a major achievement to cast Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan and other A-listers in the film. If all the superstars get equal screen space in the Hindi remake, then it can definitely be the first Indian film to cross Rs 1000 crores at the Indian box office.

USP: A rare entertainer featuring every superstar possible

Bollywood cast should be: Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif
