The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), on 6 September, recommended two-time Olympics medallist Sushil Kumar for the prestigious Padma Bhushan this year.

Along with Sushil Kumar, Dronacharya awardee Yashvir Singh and female wrestler Alka Tomar's names have been forwarded to the Sports Ministry for the Padma Shri. 15-time world billiards and snooker champion Pankaj Advani is also in the fray for the Padma Bhushan. Ace pistol shooter Jitu Rai and table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal have also been recommended for the Padma Shri.

Ever since Narsingh Yadav's controvery, Sushil Kumar has not been on good terms with the ministry. However, a thaw in the relationship is evident and recommending Sushil's name for the third highest civilian honour seems to be the first step in that direction.
